Anyone can get gum disease, even celebrities like Whoopie Goldgerg. Watch the video of her story:

Whoopi Goldberg talks about Periodontal Disease

Periodontal (gum) disease is a gum infection found at and below your gum-line. If left untreated, it can cause bone loss around the roots of your teeth making them loose and painful and leaving you less able to chew.

Gum disease is a silent and most often painless disease. Most people are unaware that they have it at all. A thorough exam by a dentist can detect if you have periodontal disease. Chronic bad breath (halitosis), bleeding, red and puffy gums are early signs of gum infection. The initial treatment is a non-surgical approach. A registered dental hygienist can painlessly eliminate the infection, build-up and tarter that is trapped underneath the gum-line. Sometimes antibiotics are placed under the gum and you may be prescribed an oral antibiotic also. In some cases, gum surgery may be required if the disease has progressed too far.

Periodontal disease has recently been linked as a contributing factor to heart disease and to low birth weight babies.

Periodontal therapy can prevent future bone loss around your teeth and enable you to keep your teeth for a lifetime.
